The River Stour is the original lifeblood of Harwich. Having established itself as a naval port, Harwich moved into merchant shipping during the 17th Century, at least when Britain wasn't at war with Europe!

The River itself continues passes Mistley (for the swans), Flatford Mill (Willy Lot was here), Dedham (John Constable was here) and into Sudbury.
